A woman has stirred widespread reactions online after claiming that she spent 10 years living with mental illness following instructions given by a spiritual leader who promised that the sacrifice would bring wealth and success to her husband.

Woman says husband abandoned her after decade-long ordeal linked to prophecy

The woman, whose identity was not immediately disclosed, shared her story in a viral social media post in 2026, alleging that the events began shortly after her marriage in 2016 when she was 21 years old.

According to her, a pastor convinced her that enduring years of madness was necessary for her husband’s greatness to manifest.

She said she agreed after being persuaded that it was a better alternative to ritual practices.

Husband remarries as woman seeks justice

Narrating her experience, the woman said she briefly regained awareness in 2019 after being taken into a church that cared for her.

“I saw myself in a church and they started taking care of me. I went home and met my husband sleeping. He was shocked to see me and asked why I was back home. He later took me back because the pastor said it was not yet time for me to recover,” she said.

The woman further claimed that she eventually returned in 2026 only to discover that the pastor had died and her husband had become wealthy and remarried.

“I found my husband through neighbours. He now has a house, a car and another wife. He said my madness was not what made him rich. I have nothing left and people are showing me videos of when I was mad. I will report him everywhere and seek justice,” she said.

The allegation has reignited discussions about spiritual manipulation in Nigeria. Similar concerns have surfaced in previous years, with rights advocates repeatedly warning against exploitative religious practices that target vulnerable individuals.
