A man has sparked debate online after revealing that his wife decided to travel abroad alone after he previously asked her to put her own relocation plans on hold and remain in Nigeria to care for his mother.
According to the man, he had been living with his mother before getting married. After the wedding, he and his wife planned to apply for UK visas together with the intention of relocating as a couple.
However, he said his mother expressed concerns about living alone and preferred that his wife remain behind to keep her company.
Believing it was the best arrangement, he asked his wife to postpone her travel plans while he relocated first.
The man said, “Later, I asked her to put her plans on hold so I could travel first while she stayed behind to take care of my mom.”
He explained that the request led to a disagreement, after which the couple stopped discussing the matter.
Later, he added, “Now, she has suddenly told me that she has gotten her visa and plans to travel instead. She said I should stay behind to take care of my mother, and that once she settles abroad, she’ll visit us often.”
He further asked, “Is it a bad thing as a man to instruct my own wife on what to do?”
The post has generated widespread reactions, with many users divided over whether the husband’s request was reasonable or unfair.
While some argued that caring for elderly parents is a shared family responsibility, others maintained that expecting a new wife to abandon her own relocation plans placed an unequal burden on her.
The story continues to fuel conversations about marriage, family expectations and balancing spousal commitments with responsibilities to ageing parents.
