At least 31 people were killed following the airstrike that hit some herders waiting to transport their cattle from the community that connects Benue to Nasarawa.

Names of 37 herders killed in Akwanaja in Doma Local Government Area of Nasarawa State have been made public.

Recall that the herders were killed in an airstrike suspected to have been carried out by the Nigerian Air Force on January 24, 2023.

At least 31 people were killed following the airstrike that hit some herders waiting to transport their cattle from the community that connects Benue to Nasarawa.

The herders were returning from Makurdi, Benue State Capital, where they had gone to retrieve over 1,000 cows seized by the Benue Livestock Guards.

Reacting to the outrage that followed the development, the Nasarawa government said the airstrike was not carried out by the Nigerian Air Force (NAF).

The state Governor, Abdullahi Sule, in an interview on ARISE TV, said an unidentified “drone” wrecked the attack, adding that an investigation has begun to ascertain the truth of the situation.

However, the federal government and military authorities have remained silent on the sad incident.

According to Daily Trust, a comprehensive list obtained on Thursday revealed that 31 bodies were recovered while 6 other bodies were burnt beyond recognition.

The list was contained in a petition sent to the National Human Rights Commission by the Fulbe Global Development and Rights Initiative (FGDRI) and signed by its President, Salim Musa Umar.

Umar disclosed that 9 other persons injured are still on admission at the General Hospital Lafia Nasarawa State, saying the FG and military are yet to acknowledge the incident and it is worrisome.

He also alleged that the military had tentatively reached out to select victims’ families with a view to silencing them without accepting responsibility.
