A Nigerian man has stirred mixed reactions online after sharing his opinion on infidelity in marriage, admitting that he would end his marriage immediately if his wife cheated on him but would expect forgiveness if he were the one who strayed.
Speaking in a video making round on X (formerly Twitter), he maintained that a wife’s infidelity is a deal breaker for him, insisting there would be no room for negotiation if such happened in his marriage.
According to him, while he believes he would plead for forgiveness if he cheated, he expects his wife to forgive him because of her kind-hearted nature.
In his words, he said:
“For me, if my wife cheats on me, that is the end. That is the deal breaker. I cannot negotiate it. But if I cheat, I will beg for forgiveness. I believe strongly that she is kind-hearted and that she will forgive me.
Traditionally in Africa, men are ascribed to be polygamous. Therefore, we can be in a marriage or relationship and still have extramarital affairs or cheat on our partner and get away with it. But we men do not want the women we see as our shrine to cheat.”
He went on to argue that, traditionally, African men are often regarded as polygamous, claiming this is why some men engage in extramarital affairs while expecting their wives to remain faithful.
His remarks have since sparked heated reactions online, with many social media users divided over what they described as a double standard in relationships.
