INEC receives 12 additional applications for party registration

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has confirmed that it has now received a total of 122 applications from associations seeking registration as political parties.

This update was contained in a statement released on Thursday by Sam Olumekun, INEC National Commissioner and Chairman of its Information and Voter Education Committee. The latest figure marks an increase from the 110 applications announced by the commission on June 23.

“On Monday last week, 23rd June 2025, the commission announced that it had received applications from 110 associations seeking registration as political parties,” Olumekun stated. “As of yesterday, Wednesday, 2nd July 2025, the commission has received 12 more applications, bringing the total to 122.”

He reaffirmed the commission’s commitment to conducting the review process with fairness and transparency, assuring the public that the names, acronyms, addresses, and interim leadership details of the applicant associations had been made available on INEC’s website and other public platforms.

Olumekun also highlighted that the applications will be assessed in line with the Electoral Act and INEC’s 2022 Regulations and Guidelines for Political Parties. He revealed that the commission had observed internal leadership changes in some of the applicant groups, including one case where an interim secretary defected to another association.

INEC has urged all applicant associations to ensure consistency in their leadership and contact information throughout the application process.

“To facilitate the consideration of these applications, the commission appeals to associations to maintain consistency of their proposed leadership and addresses so that they do not, by their own actions, cause delays to the timely consideration of their applications,” the statement read.

The commission continues to monitor developments and has pledged to keep Nigerians informed as the review process unfolds.
