James Milner’s Passionate Pre-Match Team Talk Proves How Important He Is To Liverpool Football Club

He may not be an ever-present member of the club’s starting XI these days but the importance of James Milner to Liverpool Football Club is undeniable.

The 34-year-old, who has made 37 appearances in all competitions this season, continues to lead by example. He was the only member of Liverpool’s first team squad in attendance as the youth team played a huge part in their FA Cup clash against Shrewsbury.

And ahead of the 2019/20 season, Milner turned up to the club’s pre-season training camp in America looking ripped after the summer break. In fact, he came out on top in a number of fitness tests, including the bleep test, despite being older than most of his teammates.

It’s clear that the former Manchester City, Leeds and Newcastle midfielder is a born leader and a clip from back in March, just before kick-off against Bournemouth, is a prime example of Milner’s incredible leadership skills.

“Reactions straight away!” he tells the players as they warm up. “As soon as we lose it bodies around it and play it out that area. Everything we do, highest tempo today. Doesn’t matter who scores, we score, they score, every kick off is a trigger for us.”

You can see his rousing speech in the clip below.

After an early scare from Callum Wilson in the opening minutes of the game, Liverpool went on to win the game 2-1 thanks to goals from Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane and as a result of their victory, Jurgen Klopp’s side went 25 points clear in the title race.

Was the rally cry from Milner a factor in their comeback? We like to think so.

Time and time again, Jurgen Klopp has called upon the midfielder to provide both offensively and defensively, even if that does mean making an impact off the bench.

And there’s no doubt he will play a big part in the 2020/21 season.
