John McGinn Calls Out Bizarre Fabrizio Romano Post After Scotland World Cup Win

It was a historic occasion for Scotland in the early hours Sunday morning, with Steve Clarke’s side earning their first World Cup victory since 1990 with a 1-0 win over Haiti.

Playing in their first game at the tournament for 28 years, the meeting with the Haitians was seen as a must win if Scotland were to harbour hopes of reaching the knockout stage. Remarkably, the nation has never progressed beyond the group stage in any of their eight previous appearances at the World Cup.

That pressure did not appear to show in this game, with a first half goal from John McGinn proving to be the difference between the sides.

McGinn would be named man-of-the-match for his performance. It has been quite the few weeks for the midfielder, who also won the Europa League with Aston Villa last month before being publicly questioned by Roy Keane ahead of this tournament.

He was certainly in a jovial mood after the game, taking time to poke fun at one of the biggest names in football media.

John McGinn calls out journalist after Scotland World Cup win

John McGinn is a rarity among modern footballers in that he is not afraid to show a bit of personality both on and off the pitch. That included on social media last night, where he called out a strange error from Fabrizio Romano.

The renowned transfer guru shared an image of the Scot with his man-of-the-match award, but labelled the player as ‘Scott McGinn’.

This did not go unnoticed by McGinn, who suggested that the lack of transfer rumours surrounding him in recent seasons meant that the Italian journalist might not have paid him much attention.

The tweet was quickly deleted by Romano, although it was picked up by a number of social media users prior to that.

That error is unlikely to dampen what was a massive occasion for both John McGinn and Scotland.

Speaking after the game, he summed up what this result meant to the team.

Scotland will have more difficult tasks on the horizon, with games against Morocco and Brazil to come.

However, this result has likely already secured a top three finish in the group and a potential place in the knockout rounds.
