Jose Mourinho Is Unhappy About Spurs’ Wait To Play Sheffield United

Jose Mourinho’s grumblings over Premier League fixture congestion have now extended to him complaining that Tottenham have had too long between games during Project Restart.

Tottenham face Sheffield United on Thursday, more than a week after their last game – a 2-0 victory over West Ham.

Chris Wilder’s side, in contrast, have played twice in that time. And Mourinho, who has often criticised English football for fixture pile-ups, is now miffed by his side’s long break.

‘It’s not good for us, it’s too long. If you asked me the perfect time in between matches, I’d always say three days. Two days? No. But more than three days, especially in this moment when you are still chasing your best form, your best intensity, I think a three-day gap is the perfect situation,’ he said.

‘So I’m not happy to be waiting for this match for so long… I don’t think (it’s beneficial), especially after a victory – you want to play. I always say: after victories you don’t need time to rest.

‘You don’t need recovery time, what you need is to play. And of course in this special situation of months without matches you start, you have two matches, you’re getting some intensity and then to stop for more than a week again of course is not good.

‘And especially it’s not good because now we play four matches in a very small period of time. But that’s what it is and we have to just think about the match tomorrow and nothing else.’

Mourinho also confirmed he hopes Eric Dier will sign a new deal at the club and the manager also expects the England international to escape a ban for his fracas in the crowd earlier this season after Arsenal’s Matteo Guendouzi was not punished for grabbing the throat of Brighton striker Neal Maupay.

‘I think (the FA) made a decision when Guendouzi grabbed the other guy by his neck. The decision was made in that moment,’ Mourinho said. ‘What else can I expect?’

On Dier’s contract, which runs out next summer, he added: ‘My boss Mr (Daniel) Levy tells me that he wants Eric to sign a new contract and Eric tells me that he is more than happy here, he is more than happy with his situation, especially now where he feels that we have a certain idea for him and for the team.

‘And he tells me that he wants very much to stay, so I hope they can find an agreement because I try to take the team in a certain direction and when I try to develop a player in the team, it’s because I am waiting for the player to stay with us.’
