Kelechi Iheanacho has made an early return to training as he pushes for a starting role in Saturday’s Scottish Cup final for Celtic against Dunfermline Athletic.
The forward, who joined Celtic as a free agent, has been managing fitness setbacks throughout the season but remains an influential figure in the squad’s title-winning campaign.
His decision to report for training ahead of schedule, despite a scheduled rest day, is being interpreted internally as a direct bid to convince manager Martin O’Neill of his readiness for the final.
Iheanacho has struggled with recurring fitness issues that have limited his ability to secure a consistent starting role.

Even so, he contributed key goals during Celtic’s Premiership-winning run, including important strikes against Dundee, Hibernian and Motherwell.
Those moments ensured he remained part of the club’s decisive end-of-season push despite intermittent availability.
Despite his contributions, Iheanacho has frequently been rotated behind Japan international Daizen Maeda due to fitness concerns and tactical preferences.
The competition for attacking places has remained tight, with Celtic balancing form, availability and intensity in selection decisions.
Saturday’s Scottish Cup final represents a key opportunity for Iheanacho to reinforce his importance in the squad.
