A video circulating on social media has sparked public outrage after a woman claimed that the Nigerian Army allegedly demanded ₦2 million before bringing her late brother’s body for burial in Benin City, Edo State.
In the emotional footage, the grieving sister said the deceased soldier had served in the military since he was 20 years old before his death while on duty in Benin.
She claimed the family was told they must first pay a large sum before the corpse would be released for burial.
“Guys, something just happened. This is where they supposed to bury my brother… this is the shovel that they want to do burial,” she said in the video.
Expressing frustration, she added: “What pisses me the most is that my brother is an army man. He has been serving since he was 20.”
She further alleged that the family was informed of the payment condition before the body would be released.
“They said they cannot be able to bring his corpse home till the family send 2 million Naira to the army,” she said.
According to her, the amount was described as transportation costs for moving the remains.
“We have to send 2 million Naira before they will bring his corpse… for transportation to bring his corpse,” she added.
The woman also questioned whether the arrangement aligned with military burial procedures for serving personnel.
“If you die as an army person… they will provide a vehicle that will carry your corpse and bring you back home,” she said, expressing confusion over the situation.
As of the time of filing this report, the Nigerian Army has not issued an official response to the allegation.
