The Lagos State government has discovered a network of 86 makeshift rooms constructed underneath the Dolphin Estate Bridge in Ikoyi,
a high-brow area of Lagos. According to reports, tenants were paying a staggering N250,000 per year to live in these cramped spaces, measuring just 10×10 or 12×10 feet.
The Lagos Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, revealed the discovery on social media along with videos showing the eviction of tenants and dismantling of the structures. The enforcement team from the Ministry removed all 86 rooms, including a container reportedly used for illegal activities.
Authorities also arrested 33 individuals said to be illegally occupying the space. The news has sparked mixed reactions online, with some questioning the high rent for such precarious living conditions and criticizing the lack of alternative accommodation for those displaced. Others emphasized safety concerns and potential illegal activities happening under the bridge.
This incident highlights the critical housing shortage in Lagos, where many residents struggle to find affordable and safe living spaces. The Lagos State government faces the challenge of addressing this issue while ensuring public safety and proper urban planning.
