Lampard Speaks On Chelsea’s Goalkeeping Situation Following Mendy’s Arrival

Edouard Mendy has been told he will have to wait for his Chelsea debut.

Frank Lampard looks set to stick with error-prone Kepa Arrizabalaga and give the Spain keeper one last chance at West Brom.

Chelsea boss Lampard has spoken to Kepa and Willy Caballero ahead of the trip to the Hawthorns but it would seem that £22m signing Mendy has been brought in to try and shake-up the dynamic between the three keepers.

Lampard said: “There’s no clarity on that one yet about what will happen and I’m not going to speak about the maybes or what might happen in the future. I think the most important thing now is the game this weekend, which Mendy won’t be involved in.

“I will have conversations with all the goalkeepers and be very open about it and we’ll see the way to move forward.

“With the dynamic of the goalkeepers, we know we’ve had problems in the goalkeeping area in the first two games of the season and at times last year.

“We can be very honest and open about that – and Kepa himself – in that search for the best performance levels. Mendy comes in to be competition in that area. I don’t want to talk about No1s, twos and threes at the minute because we’re not in that position.”

The keeper situation has been one of Lampard’s toughest tests as a manager because, clearly, Chelsea do not want to give up on the £71m paid for Kepa two years ago.

And Lampard said it was a ‘big mistake’ that had a hugely negative impact on the game for the Blues

But, equally, Kepa has dropped major clangers in both of Chelsea’s Premier League games this season and is struggling for form and confidence.

However, one interesting extra dynamic in the whole keeper set-up is the involvement of Petr Cech, the club’s technical and performance adviser, because he was even pictured doing a training session with the keepers – complete with wearing his helmet.

Cech championed the signing of Mendy and Lampard said he is happy to lean on his experience and advice on the keeper situation.

Lampard added: “There’s no written rule to when he’s out there at the minute. I’m very comfortable with that. Petr came to me and talked about it before he started training at first. We were sort of suffering with the squad and numbers and now Petr is training very regularly with the group.

“That can change at any time. it’s not something I have a problem with in any way and that communication is always really good. It’s something I like. We are a tight knit family here at Chelsea. It’s important that we’ve promoted that a lot.

“That was one of the things when I came back to the club. It’s not like I’m going to put my boots on and take part every day, we’re not doing it on that front, but what we’re trying to do is make sure that the group is together.

“Petr has his job but he’s also at times helping with the goalkeepers. Why would you not tap into having the best goalkeeper in the world, which he was for a long time, to pass on that knowledge?”
