Leeds United’s transfer approach for Julian Brandt as clarity on SC Braga goalkeeper emerges

The attacking playmaker has 43 caps for Germany and more than 300 appearances for Borussia Dortmund

Leeds United are exploring a deal for soon-to-be free agent Julian Brandt, who has 43 caps for Germany and is set to leave Borussia Dortmund at the end of his contract this month.

The attacking midfielder started 17 of Dortmund’s 29 Bundesliga games last season, registering seven goals and four assists. Leeds are expected to hunt for a new number 10 this summer, one who can also play on the wing if required.

Brandt is a 10 by trade but has operated on either flank more than 200 times across his career – more so on the left – though only did so once last season. Aged 30, he would mark a diversion away from last season’s criteria of attaining players in their peak years.

In fact if signed, he would become the oldest outfield player should 32-year-old Sam Byram, currently discussing his future with Leeds chiefs, not pen a renewal.

However, with such vast experience both in Europe – including 82 Champions League games – and internationally, Brandt would be a statement recruit.

The German is expected to be the subject of numerous enquiries this summer with the likes of Roma, Lazio and Galatasaray all linked already. But, as first reported by the Yorkshire Evening Post, Leeds are looking at joining the race.

Manager Daniel Farke had wanted another versatile number 10 besides Brenden Aaronson – who now has a year left on his contract – since last year. He finally managed to capture Brighton’s Facundo Buonanotte on loan in January, after he snubbed the Whites for Chelsea late in the summer window.

His move was ultimately a flop with just one FA Cup start and three Premier League substitute appearances. But such a player profile is expected to be sought after as a key transfer area once again, while the goalkeeper position could also be a consideration.

Leeds are in renewal talks with Karl Darlow, who is out of contract in 11 days’ time, but could still decide to look into the market. Lukas Hornicek of SC Braga is one name that has been linked with Elland Road.

Leeds Live understands that the 23-year-old Czech shot-stopper, who has been taken to the World Cup, has indeed come across the radar of United but there is nothing beyond that currently with no firm interest as things stand.
