Andy Burnham was heavily involved with the plan to regenerate the land surrounding the new Old Trafford.
Man United step up new Old Trafford plans – land deal, Andy Burnham, finance plan, timescale
All you need to know about Manchester United’s plan for a new Old Trafford…
United have secured the majority of the land to build a new 100,000-seater stadium. United had been in talks with Freightliner to acquire land behind the Stretford End, but talks had stalled, leading the club to look at alternative options for land around the current stadium
United have now announced they have struck a deal for a different plot of land located approximately 350m north-west of the current stadium. It’s a 25-acre triangle, approximately 350m from Old Trafford (located between Wharfside Way, Europa Way and John Gilbert Way).
The Reds now have the majority of the land needed for their project and will continue to work on acquiring the remaining land, which is not expected to be a problem.
United’s design work on the new stadium had been paused while talks with Freightliner took place. United had been in discussions with Freightliner for a year before considering other options.
United don’t expect their new stadium plans to be impacted by Andy Burnham’s departure as Greater Manchester mayor. Burnham was appointed as a member of parliament for Makerfield last week, the first step to replacing Keir Starmer as Prime Minister.
Starmer announced he is stepping down as prime minister on Monday morning. Burnham, who has been involved in United’s plans to build a new Old Trafford, is the heavy favourite to succeed Starmer in Downing Street.
Burnham was involved with the Old Trafford regeneration project, not the construction of the stadium itself.
United sources have confirmed that stadium plans will be unaffected because the Old Trafford regeneration project is covered by the Mayoral Development Corporation, which has been constituted by parliament and can only be unpicked by the government.
United’s stadium will be financed privately. The club continues to have positive conversations with potential investors and all stakeholders. The plan is to build it in time for the 2035 women’s World Cup.
