Nollywood actor and filmmaker Deyemi Okanlawon has expressed concern about what he sees as the culture of rewarding mediocrity over excellence in Nigeria.
Speaking during a recent episode of the Dear Ife podcast, Okanlawon argued that people who are less competent often appear to achieve greater success than highly skilled professionals.
According to the actor, Nigeria is a society where mediocrity frequently thrives at the expense of excellence, making it challenging for professionals who strive to maintain high standards.
He further warned that being “too professional” in Nigeria can sometimes hinder career growth and success, suggesting that the country’s system does not always reward merit and competence.
“In a country where mediocrity reigns, you can’t be too serious. I joked in a country of mad people, you can’t be same and you’re going to succeed.
“I have realised that you have to tone your intellect down a lot to succeed here,” he said.
