Mentally Challenged Woman Gives Birth To Baby By Roadside In Ebonyi (Photos)

The mother and child were rescued by a human rights group after they were alerted by a good Samaritan.

A mentally challenged woman conceived a a baby girl by the roadside in Ebonyi state on Friday, December 10.

The mother and child were rescued by a human rights group, HURIDE, after they were alerted by a good Samaritan, Mr Nwakpu Cosmas Aluma.

“Met this baby delivered along the road by a mentally not stable woman, late evening today. Had the cord clamped and baby separated from the mother successfully with the help of people around. And it’s a baby girl,” Cosmas wrote.

“I quickly chatted Mr. Sampson Oko Nweke who responded immediately. Promised to come around for rescue. Thanks to people who gathered, donated and helped save the mother and the baby’s life. Both of them are in good condition.

“Before the filing of this report, the mother and the baby has been taken to the hospital for further evaluation and care. Thanks to Mr. Sampson and his team for the Swift response given. I will visit the hospital tomorrow to know how they are fairing. Glory be to God!What good he cannot do does not exist. I am Cosmas.”

Confirming the development, Sampson Oko Nweke, HURIDE chairman, Ebonyi State chapter, said the baby and mother are currently receiving treatment at the Newborn Unit of the Alex Ekwueme Federal Teaching Hospital Abakaliki.

“It was on Friday night(10th December. 2021) that HURIDE got a call from a good Samaritan, (Nwakpu Cosmas Aluma) reporting a case of a female neonate delivered around Mile 4 hospital Axis by a mentally challenged mother who has no clear identity. HURIDE, being a member of the Gender Based Violence (GBV) Taskforce in Ebonyi State ,immediately contacted the GBV Taskforce Coordinator, Barr FaithVin Nwancho,” he narrated.

“Within a short while, our team arrived the spot in company of a special detachment from Kpirikpiri police station. It was around 9pm.

“We took the baby and the mother to the Newborn Unit of the Alex Ekwueme Federal Teaching Hospital Abakaliki (AE-FUTHA1) where they are currently receiving proper medical attention. Unfortunately however, the Social welfare department of the hospital is nothing to write home about. It’s not working at all.

“It took the financial intervention of the Police and the GBV Taskforce to sustain the hospital care and treatment of the baby and her mother up until now. However, we are hopeful that the Ebonyi State ministry of women Affairs which is also a member of the GBV Taskforce will also step into their affairs from tomorrow.

“Thank you Cosmas. Thank you Barr Faith. Thank you Rev Flora Egwu. Thank you DSP Alex. I am Sampson Oko Nweke, HURIDE chairman, Ebonyi State”
