At the recent Africa Climate Summit, climate activists have called for a commitment to triple global renewable energy capacity to 11,000 Gigawatts by 2030, a crucial step to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius. They commended African leaders for their efforts in scaling up renewable energy and urged for additional financial and technological support from African governments.
However, activists expressed concerns about false solutions and the promotion of fossil gas by Senegal’s Macky Sall and the African Development Bank’s Akinwumi Adesina during the summit’s opening. They emphasized the urgency of transitioning to renewable energy to mitigate the severe impacts of the climate crisis.
Charity Migwi, Regional Campaigner for 350Africa.org, stated that while this is a positive step, it falls short of expectations. She urged African leaders to take concrete actions supported by the necessary financial backing to address the climate crisis effectively. Migwi also called on the international community to play a role in financing the energy transition, emphasizing the urgency of the situation.
