Mourinho Hits Back At Solksjaer And Manchester United As He Prepares For Old Trafford Return

Jose Mourinho has escalated his war of words with Manchester United by aiming a dig at his former club over their win at Brighton on Saturday.

The Red Devils emerged victorious from their clash with the Seagulls as Bruno Fernandes converted a controversial penalty in the 10th minute of added time.

The spot kick was awarded by VAR for a handball infringement after the full-time whistle had been blown, prompting huge protests from Brighton players as play was restarted for Fernandes to convert from 12 yards. Meanwhile, Spurs were on the receiving end of late penalty drama in their 1-1 draw with Newcastle on Sunday afternoon.

The north London club were on course for three points heading into the closing seconds but VAR intervened to award Newcastle a penalty for a handball and Callum Wilson converted to level the scores.

And ahead of Tottenham’s trip to Old Trafford on Sunday, Mourinho could not help but take a swipe at Manchester United over the manner of their victory at Brighton.

The Portuguese said: “At some clubs, even after the last whistle, it’s possible for something important to happen, but for us I knew that after the last whistle it was over.”

Mourinho’s clear jibe at United comes after his back-and-forth squabble with Red Devils boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

After Brighton hit the woodwork a Premier League record five times against his side, Solskjaer joked: “You have to be happy Jose isn’t here to measure the goalposts.”

The Norwegian made the remark after Mourinho complained about Shkendija’s goals being too small as Spurs faced the North Macedonian side in the Europa League qualifying stages last week, prompting UEFA to adjust the woodwork.

Mourinho hit back at Solskjaer with a dig about the number of penalties United are awarded, saying: “I don’t think he will concern himself with the size of the goal but the size of the penalty box… he will not play with an 18 yard box, only 22 yards.”
