A California man was sentenced to four years in prison, following an egregious domestic violence incident in that was captured on video by his nine-year-old son.
38-year-old Miguel Lazaro-Castillo, who in October entered a plea of no contest to charges of felony domestic violence, misdemeanor child abuse, and false imprisonment, was given the maximum prison term permitted by law this week, which is four years.
The Yuba County District Attorney’s Office pushed for the maximum penalty despite Lazaro having no criminal record. Officials said “based on the brutality of his actions and his utter disregard for his children,” Lazaro-Castillo deserved to be punished to the fullest extent of the law.
The incident happened shortly before 2am on an October night as the Yuba County Sheriff’s Department got a 911 call from one of Lazaro-Castillo’s children. “When deputies arrived six minutes later, they located Lazaro-Castillo’s wife lying face-down on the floor, surrounded by bloody napkins. Lazaro-Castillo was sitting on top of her, and their three minor children, ages 15, 14, and nine, were also present,” said the Yuba County District Attorney’s Office.
Lazaro-Castillo denied hitting his wife, saying he didn’t know where the bloody napkins came from as police assessed the scene. Authorities soon discovered that his nine-year-old son recorded the attack in a chilling six-minute video.
The district attorney’s office explained the grim details of the attack, in which he beat the woman senseless in front of their children who tried to help their mother.
