Olly Murs Gives Insight Into Wayne Rooney’s No-Nonsense Managerial Approach

Wayne Rooney fumed at Olly Murs for being late for training ahead Soccer Aid this evening.

Rooney, now player-coach at Derby County, will make his managerial debut in the charity fixture when he takes charge of the England side alongside Sam Allardyce at Old Trafford.

It’s a charity affair, with UNICEF once again involved as the long-standing event looks to raise funds vulnerable children and families – but also help stop the spread of coronavirus at the same time through the ‘Play for Generation COVID’ scheme.

Yet Manchester United and England’s record goalscorer Rooney is not taking it lightly and desperately wants to get a first win under his belt.

So when Murs and Mark Wright rocked up to the training pitch later than they were supposed to a few days back, the 34-year old was not happy in the slightest.

“We turned up, me and Wrighty, and he absolutely killed us!,” Murs told talkSPORT.

“He said ‘I can’t believe you’re late, why are you late for training? You’ve got to take this more seriously.

“I was like ‘woah, woah, woah, Wayne I’ve been doing some promos for the show’ – ‘Well, I don’t care, get out on the football pitch. Come on we’ve got to win it this year.

“He’s really excited, he’s been giving us the treatment. He’s been shouting at us, screaming at us.

“He wants to win and I love that.

“Turning up to Soccer Aid, as much as a laugh it is with all the lads, I love people taking it seriously because that’s what it’s all about.

“With Wayne, you can see it doesn’t matter what game it is, he wants to win.”

Rooney’s involvement comes after received special permission of his club Derby, who are in action in a pre-season friendly against Barrow today.

Legends such as David James, Wes Brown, Andy Cole, Ashley Cole, Joe Cole and Gareth Barry are all turning out for the Three Lions at Old Trafford, with the likes of Shay Given, Patrice Evra, Michael Essien, Darren Fletcher, Claude Makelele, Mikael Silvestre and Robbie Keane all turning out for the World XI.

Kick off is at 6:30, with the behind-closed-doors game being shown live on ITV.
