Poland snatch late draw as Super Eagles held 2-2 in Warsaw friendly

The Super Eagles of Nigeria were denied victory in dramatic fashion as Przemyslaw Wisniewski’s stoppage-time strike earned Poland a 2-2 draw in an entertaining international friendly at the Stadion Narodowy in Warsaw.

Nigeria twice took the lead through Terem Moffi and Paul Onuachu, but the hosts fought back on both occasions to ensure the contest ended level.

Moffi fires Nigeria ahead

Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle handed a debut to Banik Ostrava wing-back Abdullahi Bewene, while Igoh Ogbu, Tochukwu Nnadi and Terem Moffi retained their places from the side that defeated Jamaica in the Unity Cup final.

After a balanced opening period, Nigeria began to assert control and were rewarded in the 23rd minute. Nnadi sparked the move with a clever passing sequence before Moses Simon threaded a precise ball into the area for Moffi to finish from close range.

Although the assistant referee initially flagged for offside, a VAR review confirmed the striker was onside and the goal stood.

Poland responded just before the break. Following a corner kick, Nicola Zalewski recovered possession and delivered the ball back into the danger area, where Kacper Potulski reacted quickest to poke home the equaliser.

Onuachu restores Nigeria’s advantage

Chelle made several changes after the interval, introducing Semi Ajayi, Calvin Bassey, Zaidu Sanusi, Raphael Onyedika, Paul Onuachu, Rafiu Durosinmi and Philip Otele.

The substitutions added fresh energy, and Nigeria regained the lead in the second half.

After a set-piece delivery from Fisayo Dele-Bashiru, Wilfred Ndidi’s control forced a handball from Kacper Kozlowski inside the penalty area.

Following another VAR review, Romanian referee Marian Barbu pointed to the spot, and Onuachu calmly converted the resulting penalty to put the Super Eagles back in front.

Wisniewski breaks Nigerian hearts

Nigeria appeared set to secure a valuable away victory, with Maduka Okoye producing a solid performance in goal throughout the contest.

However, deep into stoppage time, Poland found a dramatic equaliser.

Defender Przemyslaw Wisniewski unleashed a powerful long-range effort that curled into the top corner beyond Okoye’s reach.

The spectacular strike came moments before the final whistle, leaving Nigeria with no time to respond as both sides settled for a share of the spoils.

The Super Eagles will now turn their attention to their next international friendly against Portugal on June 10.
