As the Nigerian presidential election continues across the country, reports have emerged of a presiding officer allegedly aiding voters in the polling process. The incident reportedly occurred in a polling unit in Kano state, where the presiding officer was seen assisting elderly and illiterate voters.

According to eyewitnesses, the presiding officer’s actions were seen as a noble gesture by some voters who were grateful for the help. However, representatives of political parties at the polling unit expressed concern that the officer’s actions might be in breach of electoral laws and could potentially influence the outcome of the election.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), which is overseeing the election, has issued a statement in response to the incident. INEC spokesperson Festus Okoye stated that the commission is aware of the reports and is investigating the matter. He reiterated that INEC is committed to ensuring a free, fair, and credible election and will not tolerate any actions that could compromise the integrity of the process.

It is worth noting that under Nigerian electoral laws, presiding officers are not permitted to assist voters in any way. While the intention behind the presiding officer’s actions may have been well-meaning, it is important that all electoral officials adhere strictly to the guidelines set out by INEC to ensure a transparent and impartial process.

As the presidential election continues, INEC has urged all citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the appropriate authorities. The commission has assured the public that it is taking all necessary steps to ensure that the election is conducted in a manner that reflects the will of the people.
