Rapper Sarkodie condemns xenophobic attacks in South Africa after Ghanaian man was shot dead in the country

Ghanaian rapper Sarkodie has condemned the renewed wave of xenophobic attacks in South Africa following reports that a Ghanaian national was shot dead during violence targeting foreign nationals.

Reacting to the reports, the award-winning musician described the attacks as “insane” and called on South Africans to speak out more strongly against the violence.

Taking to social media, Sarkodie expressed disappointment over the situation, noting that South Africa remains one of his favourite countries despite the recent developments. “Disappointed in one of my favourite places in the world, SA. I know not everyone out there is involved in this, but this is insane and makes no sense!” he wrote.

The rapper also appealed to South Africans to take a firmer public stance against xenophobic violence, warning that the situation was escalating. “I wish my South African brothers and sisters would speak up against this more strongly because it’s getting out of hand. God help our African brothers and sisters out there,” he added.

His comments come amid renewed concerns over the safety of foreign nationals in South Africa, following reports of attacks on migrants and businesses owned by foreigners. Videos circulating on social media in recent days have also shown groups allegedly targeting migrants in parts of the country.

The reported killing of a Ghanaian national has sparked outrage among Ghanaians at home and abroad, with many calling on South African authorities to ensure the safety of all residents regardless of nationality.

The Government of Ghana has previously said it monitors the welfare of its citizens living in South Africa and has engaged South African authorities during past outbreaks of xenophobic violence. Ghana’s diplomatic mission in Pretoria has also urged Ghanaians residing in the country to remain vigilant and cooperate with local law enforcement during periods of heightened tension.

South Africa has experienced several waves of xenophobic violence over the past two decades, with attacks frequently targeting African migrants from countries including Ghana, Nigeria, Zimbabwe, Ethiopia, Somalia and Mozambique. Previous incidents have resulted in deaths, injuries and the destruction of businesses, drawing condemnation from governments across the continent and renewed calls for African unity.

Sarkodie’s remarks have since attracted widespread reactions on social media, with many users echoing his appeal for peace and urging African leaders and citizens to reject xenophobia and protect the lives and livelihoods of fellow Africans.
