Romelu Lukaku open to Jose Mourinho reunion

Everton striker Romelu Lukaku has said he would have no problem working with his former boss Jose Mourinho in the future.

Lukaku, 22, has suggested that he could leave Everton this summer and his father Roger said that either Bayern Munich or Manchester United would be a good next destination for the Belgium international.

United have been strongly linked with a move for Mourinho should they decide to part company with current manager Louis van Gaal during the close season, with sources telling ESPN FC the former Real Madrid boss is confident of getting the job.

As manager of Chelsea, Mourinho sanctioned Lukaku’s £28 million move to Everton in July 2014.

The Portuguese coach later claimed that the player was “not highly motivated” to fight for his starting place at the Blues after spending two seasons on loan at West Bromwich Albion and Everton.

However, speaking to Belgian newspaper La Derniere Heure, Lukaku said he would have no issue working under Mourinho again.

“Of course,” Lukaku said. “Some people will say that I need to convince him but it’s not a question of that. Three years ago I was 20 and I wasn’t ready to be immediately effective in a top team.

“Several good seasons, including the current one, have changed the situation. I’ll be 23 [in May] and I could leave this summer.”

Lukaku said playing Champions League football is “the next step” for his career and United, currently sixth in the Premier League, have work to do if they are to qualify for next season’s competition.

Asked about his father’s comments on Bayern and United, he said: “I understand why he said that. When I was small, they were two teams that impressed me with their attacking strength.

“Then they’re teams that he likes a lot. We’ll see what happens. Whatever happens, it’s always nice to be linked with such clubs. That’s the proof that they’re watching me. The rest is my agent’s business.”

The ex-Anderlecht striker also said he felt he had nothing to prove at Chelsea should his former club try to re-sign him this summer.

“No, absolutely not,” Lukaku said. “The page has turned on both sides.”
