Russia Labels LGBTQ Movement “Extremist,” Raising Fears of Crackdown

MOSCOW, March 22 (AP) – In a move condemned by human rights groups, Russia has added the LGBTQ rights movement to its official list of extremist and terrorist organizations. The decision, announced by state media outlets, follows a November Supreme Court ruling designating LGBTQ activism as “extremist.”

The move has sparked fears of a renewed crackdown on LGBTQ people in Russia. It empowers authorities to freeze the assets of LGBTQ organizations, and activists fear it could also lead to arrests and prosecutions.

“This is a dark day for LGBTQ rights in Russia,” said Anya Petrova, director of a Moscow-based LGBTQ rights group. “It sends a dangerous message that our very existence is a threat to national security.”

Russia has become increasingly hostile towards LGBTQ people in recent years. In 2013, the country passed a law banning “propaganda of non-traditional sexual relations” to minors, widely seen as a tool to silence any public discussion of LGBTQ issues.

Western governments have condemned the decision, with some calling it a further erosion of human rights in Russia. The European Union’s foreign policy chief, Josep Borrell, called it “unacceptable” and a “blatant violation of fundamental rights.”

Uncertain Future for LGBTQ Rights in Russia

The full ramifications of the decision remain unclear. It’s uncertain how aggressively authorities will enforce the designation. However, LGBTQ activists fear it could create a climate of fear and intimidation, making it even harder for them to organize and advocate for their rights.

“This decision will have a chilling effect on our community,” said Petrova. “We urge the international community to speak out against this blatant discrimination and hold Russia accountable for its actions.”
