In what appears to be a widespread protest, women from Sango Market in Ogun State, Nigeria, took to the streets to express their displeasure over the scarcity of new Naira notes in circulation.

The women, who carried placards with various inscriptions, marched through the streets of the market, calling on the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to ensure that new Naira notes are readily available for circulation. Some of the inscriptions on the placards read, “We demand new Naira notes,” “CBN, release new Naira notes,” “We need new notes for business,” and “Old notes are not good for business.”

According to one of the protesters, Mrs. Adebayo, who spoke to reporters, the scarcity of new Naira notes is causing a lot of problems for business owners in the market. She said, “We need the new Naira notes for our business transactions, but they are not available. We are forced to use old and worn-out notes, which are not accepted by some customers. This is affecting our business and our livelihoods.”

Another protester, Mrs. Oladimeji, expressed her frustration, saying, “We are tired of going to the bank every day to withdraw money, only to be given old and dirty notes. The CBN needs to do something about this.”

The protest comes on the heels of the recent announcement by the CBN that it would introduce a new Naira note in commemoration of Nigeria’s 60th independence anniversary. However, many Nigerians have complained that the new note is not readily available in circulation, despite its launch several months ago.

The CBN has yet to release an official statement in response to the protest, but the bank has previously urged Nigerians to handle the Naira notes with care to reduce wear and tear.

The Sango Market women’s protest is one of several recent demonstrations by Nigerians over the state of the country’s economy and financial system. As the country grapples with inflation and a depreciating currency, many Nigerians are calling for urgent action by the government and the CBN to address these issues.
