A Nigerian man has shared how he was reunited with his son after 17 years, claiming that the child’s mother told the boy his father was dead and denied him access throughout his childhood.
According to the man, although his son knew he was his father, the boy would secretly visit him because his mother prevented them from having a relationship.
In his words in Yoruba, he said:
“For 17 years, my son’s mother denied her son his father. She told him I had passed away. When he clocked 10 years, she called the anti-kidnapping squad on me, claiming I kidnapped our son. So I told them to take him because only the mother knows the father of her child.”
He said that when the boy turned 15, he visited him again, prompting him to report the matter to the police.
According to the man, when his son turned 17, the teenager insisted on living with him, leading both parents to take the matter to court.
“We took ourselves to court. All the evidence proved I was his father, and they granted me custody after 17 years. The court also told me to change his surname to mine. They even sent us for a DNA test because she still didn’t want me to have access to him,” she added.
He further claimed that the child’s mother demanded ₦5 million as compensation for raising the boy alone, but the court rejected the request.
The man concluded by advising single mothers not to deliberately deny children access to their fathers, saying no amount of money can replace a father’s presence in a child’s life.
