A Texas woman was arrested for reportedly trying to sell a rental car for $10,000, according to local authorities.
On Sunday, the Humble Police Department posted about the incident on Facebook, claiming a citizen flagged down an officer who said he was looking into buying a car he found online, but believed it might be stolen.
The seller, a woman who police did not identify by name, had rented a 2022 Toyota Camry and was attempting to sell the nearly brand-new car for about half of its value, police say.
The seller ultimately agreed to meet with the potential buyer at a later date to finish the transaction and take a picture of her Texas driver’s license as well as of the vehicle’s title.
However, the buyer told authorities the license and title looked fake, which police were able to eventually confirm shortly thereafter.
“Upon running the information from the license, it was found that nothing matched up,” police said.
Investigators were able to use the VIN number taken from the fake title and determine the owner of the Camry, who said the car was a rental and the seller had no authority to sell it.
With assistance from authorities, the buyer agreed to meet with the seller after the two agreed upon a price of $10,000, according to police.
Police ultimately arrested the seller upon the agreed meet-up and changed her with third-degree auto theft as well as second-degree tampering for the fake title and license.
Both counts are felony charges, according to authorities.
