Edinson Cavani’s phone call to leave Man Utd as he leads six-man exodus under Ralf Rangnick
Edinson Cavani has just six months left on his Red Devils contract and has previously flirted with the idea of leaving Manchester United due to his lack of game time.
Edinson Cavani looks certain to leave Manchester United at the end of the season with Barcelona ready to offer him a contract.
The Uruguay international has just six months left on his Red Devils contract and has previously flirted with the idea of leaving United due to his lack of game time this campaign.
Boca Juniors chief Juan Roman Riquelme revealed Cavani had been putting the feelers out as far back as January when he called to enquire about joining the Argentine side.
“In January, Cavani called me saying that he wanted to come because he was playing little there,” Riquelme told TNT Sports.
“I’ve been speaking with him for a long time and he called me in January to come because he wasn’t playing there. I remember we talked one day and the next day he came in and scored two goals in the last minutes.
“He made a comeback. From then on he started scoring goals in all the games and they renewed with him.”
Ralf Rangnick is now officially in charge at United following Michael Carrick’s final game as temporary boss.
The German will reportedly be handed a £100million budget in January to strengthen his Red Devils squad, but this will of course mean players will also be moved on.
Rangnick has previously spoken out about favouring youngsters over ageing veterans, and Cavani falls into the latter category.
Rangnick said of Zlatan Ibrahimovic in 2020: “What you should be asking is: why did Milan turn to me? What did they want to do? Maybe they were looking for a change of direction.
“It’s not my style to focus on a 38-year-old player, not because of talent, but because I prefer to create value and develop talent.
“It made little sense to me the idea of relying on Ibrahimovic or Simon Kjaer, but that’s just my way of seeing things, it’s not necessarily right or wrong. When Ibra said he didn’t know me, he wasn’t wrong. I’ve never met him.”
But Ibrahimovic isn’t the only United player who could move on as the new regime gets underway at Old Trafford.
A total of six players are edging towards the exit, with Jesse Lingard and Paul Pogba out of contract in the summer and Anthony Martial, Donny van de Beek, Diogo Dalot and, of course, Cavani, looking for new challenges.
