Thierry Henry Fears Anthony Martial Will Fail To Reach Potential At Man United

Thierry Henry fears Anthony Martial will fail to reach his full potential at Manchester United.

Despite likening the Frenchman to himself when he arrived in England in 1999, he believes he won’t reach the same heights as he did.

And that’s because the Old Trafford dressing room now is not like the environment he encountered at Arsenal under Arsene Wenger over 20 years ago.

Martial arrived at United in 2015 but has struggled for consistency throughout, with the club going through three different managers in five years.

The 24-year-old is enjoying his best campaign since his debut season, but Henry believes his development would have been improved in a better setting.

This is according to Lee Dixon, who said on the Arsenal podcast Handbrake Off, that his former team-mate told him: ‘He said, “He’s exactly like I was when I came to Arsenal, he needs to go through the process like I did with you lot and I don’t know if the Manchester United dressing room is like that.”

‘He said that was the making of him.

‘To liken himself to Martial or another player to him, it really painted a picture of what Martial was like and what his character was like because he’s super-talented like Thierry was and I think his development would have been similar.

‘I’m not saying he would have been as good as Thierry – but would have been similar if he had been in the old United dressing room with the characters like we had in our dressing room.

‘He certainly talks about that as a real learning lesson in his curve to get how brilliant he was.’

Martial is stuck on 16 goals for the season after the coronavirus pandemic brought the campaign to a sudden halt.

He hit form in February and March as a lone frontman following injury to Marcus Rashford.

But he still has some way to go if he is to ever match Henry’s Premier League impact, which saw him score 175 times for the Gunners.
