Bayern Munich forward Thomas Muller is the nemesis of Barcelona in the Champions League and he delivered a damning verdict of the Catalan giants after Wednesday’s encounter
Bayern Munich forward Thomas Muller delivered a damning verdict to Barcelona after the Catalan club’s elimination from the Champions League.
Wednesday night’s three-goal defeat against the German champions sealed Barca’s fate in the competition, coupled with Benfica – who qualified in second spot – defeating Dynamo Kiev in Lisbon.
Barca boss Xavi Hernandez gave an angry post-match interview in which he blasted his side’s performance and called their Europa League placing their new ‘reality’.
The Catalan giants failed to reach the knockout stages of the Champions League for the first time since the 2000/01 campaign after failing to progress through their group.
Yet Wednesday night’s heavy defeat was the third time in the group that they had been beaten by three or more goals – continuing a long-term trend for the club in the competition.
Since February 2017, the Blaugrana have lost ten matches in the competition by three goals or more – including games against Paris Saint-Germain (twice), Juventus (twice), Roma, Liverpool, Benfica and, on three occasions, against Bayern.
The nadir came last year, when the German club humiliated Barca 8-2 in their Champions League quarter-final – continuing their dominance in the fixture.
Experienced Bayern forward Muller – who scored his eighth goal against the Catalan club in seven matches to open the scoring on Wednesday night – has now explained the one-sided nature of the fixture.
The 32-year-old explained that Barca possessed players who were tactically and technically of the same level of those at the Bavarian club, but there was one crucial difference between their styles of play.
Muller told DAZN after Wednesday’s game: “I think Barça can’t cope with the intensity.
“Technically, they have it all, they are great players tactically and technically.
“But they can’t cope with the intensity in top football.”
Barca managed to score just two goals in their six Champions League group games and failed to find the net in any of their four group games against Bayern or Benfica.
They failed to register a shot on target in their opening day three-goal defeat against Bayern at the Camp Nou before their nadir saw them crash to a three-goal defeat in Lisbon against Benfica.
The Catalan giants will now compete in the Europa League for the first time in over two decades as Bayern march on into the knockout stages of the Champions League, where they will be among this campaign’s competition favourites.
