Japan Thrash Tunisia 4-0, Eliminate Carthage Eagles from 2026 World Cup
Monterrey, Mexico – Japan delivered a dominant performance on Sunday, June 21, 2026, routing Tunisia 4-0 in Group F at Estadio BBVA. The victory marked the 1,000th match in FIFA World Cup history and officially eliminated Tunisia from the tournament after just two group games.
Goals from Daichi Kamada (4′), Ayase Ueda (31′, 83′), and Junya Ito (69′) powered Japan to their biggest-ever World Cup win and the first time an Asian team has scored four goals in a single World Cup match. Ueda was outstanding, netting a brace and contributing to the attacking dominance.
Tunisia, already reeling from a 5-1 opening defeat to Sweden, entered the match under new coach Hervé Renard. However, they were dismantled from the outset. Kamada opened the scoring inside four minutes with Japan’s fastest-ever World Cup goal, setting the tone for a one-sided encounter.
The North Africans struggled defensively throughout, conceding nine goals across their first two matches. With zero points and a heavy goal difference, Tunisia have no mathematical chance of advancing, even as one of the best third-placed teams.
The result lifts Japan to four points, level with the Netherlands at the top of Group F. Hajime Moriyasu’s side is now well-positioned to reach the knockout stages for the fourth consecutive World Cup. They will face Sweden in their final group match on June 26.
“This victory was memorable,” Moriyasu said after the game, praising his team’s clinical finishing and intensity.
The defeat represents another disappointing World Cup campaign for Tunisia, who have never advanced past the group stage in seven appearances. Fans and analysts expressed frustration over the team’s defensive frailties and inability to compete at the highest level.
Japan, blending European-based stars with domestic talent, sent a strong message across Asia with their historic performance. The result also highlights the growing competitiveness of Asian football on the global stage.
Tunisia will now play out their final group game against the Netherlands with little more than pride on the line, while Japan will look to secure top spot and build momentum heading into the knockout rounds.
