Lionel Messi and his ‘heir apparent’ at Barcelona Anus Fati set new Champions League records on Tuesday as the Catalan side began a fresh quest for European glory.

Having been humiliated last season in the quarter-final stage by eventual champions Bayern Munich, Barcelona hit the ground running Tuesday with a 5-1 thumping of Hungarian minnows Ferencvaros.

Lionel Messi scored Barcelona’s first goal of the night and that turned to be the 16th straight season he would be scoring in this competition; a feat no other player has ever achieved not even fierce rival Cristiano Ronaldo.

Then it was the turn of Fati who volleyed in three minutes before half time to become the first player ever to score more than one Champions League goal before turning 18.

Fati set up another goal for Philippe Coutinho before Pedri made it 4 – 1 and then Ousmane Dembele put the icing on the victory to give Barcelona some much-needed momentum ahead of Saturday’s Clasico in La Liga against Real Madrid.
