UEFA Investigates England After Semi-final Win vs Denmark

UEFA’s Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body has launched an investigation against England after Denmark goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel was apparently targeted with a laser pen just before Harry Kane’s penalty in last night’s Euro 2020 semi-final.

England are also facing an investigation into crowd disturbances, including the use of fireworks during the game, as well as for the booing of the Danish national anthem by fans.

If found guilty, the English FA could face fines of €500 per firework (smoke, flares & any pyrotechnics) and €8,000 for the laser pen.

The booing of the anthem would also incur a financial penalty.

A UEFA statement said: “Disciplinary proceedings have been opened following the UEFA EURO 2020 semi-final match between England and Denmark (2-1), played on 7 July at Wembley Stadium, London.”

Charges against England are: use of laser pointer by its supporters – Article 16(2)(d) of the UEFA Disciplinary Regulations (DR), disturbance caused by its supporters during the national anthem – Article 16(2)(g) DR and lighting of fireworks by its supporters – Article 16(2)(c) DR

The case will be dealt with by the UEFA Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body (CEDB) in due course.

Prior to Kane’s penalty, Schmeichel had a green light flicker across his face but managed to save the spot kick.

But Kane reacted quickest to the rebound and swept the ball past Schmeichel from close range to score what proved to be the winning goal in extra time.

Manchester City forward Raheem Sterling won the penalty after going down in the area just before half-time in the extra period.

Laser pens are readily available and cheap.

Legislation introduced in 2017 means people who target transport operators with laser devices could be jailed for up to five years under new laws designed to protect the public.

England advanced to their first final of a major tournament since 1966 as a result of their nail-biting 2-1 victory over Denmark.
