Ukraine vs Nigeria: Four Super Eagles Who Must Improve

Gernot Rohr’s side, largely, played breathtakingly against the Yellow-Blues, but who could have done better against the Europeans?

Samuel Chukwueze

While Nigeria’s front four played brilliantly for large portions of the game, the Villarreal man’s decision-making left a lot to be desired on occasion.

His failure to look up to play in better-placed teammates sometimes led to promising moves breaking down.

The inside forward also took shots when passing might have been the better option, and he also over-hit a through ball for Victor Osimhen which could’ve increased the Super Eagles’ advantage to 3-0.

Moses Simon

The Nantes wideman has been imperious for the Canaries so far, and so something special was expected when he replaced Samuel Kalu on the left wing during the match.

However, the Levante loanee didn’t pull up any trees and failed to beat his marker on several occasions.

Kalu was a thorn in the side of the Ukrainian defence, and not having to deal with the Bordeaux man in the closing stages was probably a relief for their backline.

Anderson Esiti

Esiti replaced Oghenekaro Etebo, who moved further forward, at the base of the midfield in the latter stages of the encounter, but didn’t have the influence the Stoke City man exercised in the middle of the park.

The PAOK midfielder was making his third Super Eagles appearance, and a first since 2016, but on this evidence, he won’t be forcing himself back into Rohr’s plans more permanently any time soon.
