WAEC candidates forced to write practical exam at night in Oyo amid insecurity outrage

Candidates sitting for the 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) in parts of Oyo State were reportedly forced to write their Agricultural Science practical examination late at night, sparking concerns among parents and education stakeholders.

Reports circulating on social media showed students attempting to complete the examination in poorly lit conditions, with some relying on lanterns and mobile phone flashlights after darkness fell at their examination centres.

The development has generated widespread discussion online, with many Nigerians questioning the circumstances that led to candidates remaining at examination venues until late in the evening.

Concerns over examination conditions

According to reports, the situation was linked to the late delivery of examination materials to some centres.

The delay reportedly disrupted the examination schedule and left candidates waiting for several hours before the practical session eventually commenced.

Parents and concerned residents expressed worries about the welfare of the students, particularly given the security challenges facing many parts of the country.

Images and videos from some centres showed candidates seated in dark classrooms while attempting to complete the practical examination.

A number of social media users argued that better planning and coordination were needed to prevent similar incidents in future examination exercises.

Calls for explanation

Reacting to the incident, cleric Pastor S.O. Solarin described the situation as troubling and called for accountability from the examination body.

He said the delays left many candidates stranded at their centres long after the scheduled examination period.

Solarin also urged the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) to explain the circumstances surrounding the delayed examination materials.

The incident has since sparked debate across social media platforms, with many Nigerians calling for improved logistics and examination management to ensure students can sit for their papers under safe and suitable conditions.
