We didn’t want to guess what people think about BetCorrect. We wanted to hear it, straight from the source, in the places where the real conversations happen; bus stops, viewing centres, roadside kiosks with men arguing about an offside call or who the real GOAT is between Messi and CR7, or if the real Ronaldo can be compared to CR7.

So over a few days, the BetCorrect team packed up and hit the streets of Lagos. Five communities: Iyana-Ipaja, Agege, Mushin, Oshodi, and Ikeja. No scripts, no filters. Just phones out, app open, and real Nigerians telling us exactly what they think.

Here Is What Came Back.

“So I No Go Wait for Codes Again?”

The first thing we demoed, almost everywhere, was the feature that lets you see other people’s bets directly on the platform, no more screenshotting booking codes and dropping them in a Telegram group, hoping the person who posted it actually won last week.

At a barbing salon in Agege, Tobi, 21, wasn’t shy about his reaction.

“Bros, this one better pass Telegram sha,” he said, laughing. “You know how many fake code dem dey post for those groups? Person go screenshot old ticket, post am like say na today own. At least for here, I fit see the person’s actual account, their real wins, before I copy anything.”

Further down in Iyana-Ipaja, a quieter response but the same point. Chidinma, 24, a student of one of the universities in Lagos,  said she bets “small small, nothing serious,” liked that she could see a bettor’s history before trusting their pick.

“I don’t have time to be joining group after group just to find one good tipster,” she said. “If I can just follow someone directly and see if their picks actually work over time, that’s more honest for me.”

Follow, Get Followed, Build a Name

The follow feature, where you can follow other bettors and build your own following, got some of the liveliest reactions of the whole trip, especially from younger crowds in Oshodi and Mushin.

At Bolade bus stop in Oshodi, a small crowd gathered around our stand as our brand ambassadors walked them through the app. Emeka, who is in his mid 20s, summed up what a lot of the younger guys were thinking.

“This one na content o,” he said. “If I dey always win my bets, why won’t people follow me? Make dem see say I sabi ball well well.”

An older man selling phone gadgets nearby, wasn’t as easily impressed, but he wasn’t dismissive either. Alhaji Musa, an older man probably in his early 40s, based in Mushin, has been betting “since betting shops still dey use paper slip,” in his words.

“I’ve seen a lot of apps promise a lot of things,” he said carefully. “But if it means I can actually see somebody’s track record before I follow their advice, instead of just believing whoever is shouting the loudest, that has value. That’s the part I like.”

Peer-to-Peer: When Bragging Rights Get Real

If there was one feature that got people genuinely excited, not just polite, but excited, it was Peer-to-Peer. The idea that you can challenge a friend directly, no bookmaker in between, just your prediction against theirs.

In Ikeja, at the heart of Computer Village, a group of friends started arguing about the World Cup that was going on in North America, right in front of us.

“My guy dey alway insist say na Argetina go win this World Cup because Messi na him GOAT and him go win am back-to-back” said Jate, probably in his early 40s, pointing at his friend. “Now we fit just settle am one time. No more talk, just challenge am.”

Chioma, in her mid 30s, who is a secretary in one of the stores nearby stopped to see what the crowd was about, had a more measured take, but agreed the appeal was obvious.

“Everybody wan prove say them sabi ball pass their friend,” she said. “If you can put your money where your mouth is, directly against the person you are arguing with, that’s more interesting than just betting against an app you will never actually see.”

Your Profile as Proof: “I No Be Small Fry”

The profile feature, where your betting history and wins stack up over time, struck a nerve with people who take their football knowledge seriously. This was not about flashy graphics. It was about respect.

Back in Agege, a man who’d been quietly watching the demo over someone’s shoulder finally spoke up.

“For here, everybody get one guy wey dey claim say him sabi ball pass anybody,” he said. “If my profile fit show my correct wins, nobody fit dispute am again. I no be small fry when it comes to football, and now I fit prove am.”

Alhaji Musa, back in Mushin, saw it a little differently, more practical than prideful.

“E be like a CV for your betting,” he said. “If someone wants to know if I actually know what I’m talking about, they don’t need to take my word for it. They can just look.”

Discovering the Sharp Ones

The last feature we walked people through was discovery, finding punters who are actually winning consistently, not just loud on social media or in a group chat.

In Iyana-Ipaja, Chidinma had one of the most direct comments of the whole trip.

“Everybody wan be tipster for Lagos,” she said. “But how many of them fit show proof? If the app can just show me who’s actually winning, instead of me hunting through different Telegram groups, that saves me a lot of stress.”

What We Took Away From the Streets

Across five communities and three generations of bettors, one thing was consistent: people are tired of guessing who to trust. Paid Telegram VIP Channels, shared screenshotted codes, anonymous tipsters, group chats full of noise, Lagos bettors have seen it all, and they are not easily impressed.

What landed, again and again, was proof. A real profile. A real track record. A real person to challenge, follow, or learn from, not a stranger’s word in a Telegram group.
