Why I stopped buying gifts for men – Toke Makinwa

Media personality and actress Toke Makinwa has revealed that she no longer buys gifts for men she is romantically involved with, citing a painful experience from her undergraduate days.

Speaking in a recent episode of her Toke Moments podcast, which featured reality star Beauty Tukura, Makinwa said the decision stems from a past relationship with an older man.

According to her, she once used her school fees to sponsor her then-boyfriend’s birthday celebration, only to later discover that he had been unfaithful.

She said the experience left her traumatised and has since influenced her approach to gift-giving in romantic relationships.

“I stopped buying men gifts after I dated a man who was 10 years older than me. I spent my university semester’s school fees to celebrate his birthday and took him to an Italian restaurant in Victoria Island.

“He ordered everything on the menu. When we got home…there was another woman in his house. That broke me.”
