Wijnaldum: Aribo And African Stars Who Could Replace Ex-Liverpool Midfielder

The 30-year-old has ended his five-year stay at Anfield and Goal takes a look at African players who could step into his shoes

Wijnaldum joins PSG after leaving Liverpool

Georginio Wijnaldum has joined French side Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer after departing Liverpool.

The midfielder has been with the Reds since the summer of 2016 when he arrived from Newcastle United and was a reliable performer for Jugen Klopp’s side.

His contributions played a significant role in helping Liverpool to win the Champions League and Premier League titles, among others, and with his departure, Goal considers African stars who could replace him.

Joe Aribo

Aribo has been delivering impressive performances for Rangers since joining the club in 2019 and could be a good replacement for Wijnaldum.

In the 2020-21 campaign, he played a significant role in helping the Gers win the Scottish Premiership title, featuring in 41 games across all competitions.

His fine contributions have also earned him a number of individual awards, including winning the young player of the season in the 2019-20 campaign, and he could fit in well at Anfield.

Yves Bissouma

Bissouma has been one of the stand-out performers in the Premier League in the 2020-21 season, helping Brighton and Hove Albion to avoid relegation.

His top showings have seen a number of European clubs already jostling for his signature and could be a good addition to Klopp’s squad at Liverpool.

The Mali international’s passing accuracy and ability to open defences are some of the qualities that characterized him.

Franck Kessie

Kessie was in scintillating form for AC Milan last season, helping the club to finish as runner-up in Serie A to secure a place in the Champions League.

The Ivory Coast international scored 13 goals and provided six assists in 37 league appearances last campaign.

His ability to gain the ball quickly is also one of his qualities and he would be a good addition to Liverpool.

Hakim Ziyech

Ziyech has shown glimpses of his ability since joining Chelsea last summer, although he is yet to fully acclimatize with the Premier League side.

The versatile midfielder should be a hit in Liverpool if he joins the club, giving his unique set of technical abilities, and might slot in seamlessly just ahead of Thiago Alcantara.

Naby Keita

The Reds might already have their replacement in the Guinea international, even though has seldom been at his best since joining Liverpool in 2018 from RB Leipzig, largely due to injuries.

With Wijnaldum’s departure, he could step up his performances for the Reds and deliver more consistently than he did in his previous seasons.

Mohamed Elneny

Elneny has proven himself in the Premier League since been at Arsenal and after a spell away from the club he returned last summer.

The versatile midfielder has one year left on his current contract with the Gunners and could be a good signing for Liverpool this summer if they are looking for a cut-price option.
